Bone Grafting in Irving

See If You Need a Bone Graft before Dental Implant Surgery

One of the best and most advanced ways to replace missing teeth is with dental implants that artificially replace a natural tooth root. However, dental implants need to be surrounded by several millimeters of strong and healthy bone to help the implant post integrate and bond with the bone. If this bone isn’t present, it may mean a bone graft is required before dental implant surgery.

A bone graft isn’t a complex procedure, but it does require a great deal of skill. Bone grafting can be performed by our clinician, Dr. Mounir Iskandar, as he is an experienced prosthodontist and has a background in oral surgery. This means if you do require a bone graft, your entire treatment can be completed in our comfortable and state-of-the-art dental practice here in Irving, TX.

How Periodontal Disease & Tooth Loss Affect Your Jawbone

Jawbone loss can occur as a result of periodontal disease (gum disease), or as a natural side effect of tooth loss. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that destroys not only gum tissue but also the structures surrounding your teeth that include the ligaments and bone. This is why periodontal disease frequently causes tooth loss.

Even if you lose your teeth due to trauma or decay, their loss will still adversely affect your jawbone. Whenever you bite down or chew on a natural tooth, it creates sensations that are transmitted right through to the tooth root. These sensations indicate to the bone surrounding the tooth root that old bone cells must be renewed as they die off. When teeth are removed, the bone surrounding the tooth root no longer receives these sensations and as a result, bone cells are no longer replaced as they gradually die off and the jawbone begins to shrink.

Where Does the New Bone Come From?

A bone graft may be obtained from a variety of different sources. Quite often, bone grafting material will be artificial and will contain special growth mediums designed to encourage the growth of your natural bone cells. This artificial bone may be in the form of a matrix or membrane that will form a framework for new bone growth, and which will be gradually absorbed by your body.

How Long Will a Bone Graft Take to Heal?

It can take between three to six months or even longer for a bone graft to fully heal and to become completely integrated with your natural bone. The exact timeframe varies according to the amount of bone required.

Although this increases the time required for dental implant treatment, the final result is well worth it as a bone graft will help ensure your new dental implants are strong and secure. It will also provide the proper support for gum tissue, helping to improve the final aesthetics of treatment.
