AFTERCARE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS

When you select to receive dental implants to restore your smile, you undergo oral surgery in order to secure them to your jaw. Because of this, you’ll have to practice proper aftercare in order to ensure you allow for proper healing.

Once you head home from your dentist’s office, here are a few things you should keep in mind for the best aftercare for dental implants.

APPLY ICE FOR SWELLING

It’s not uncommon to experience some facial swelling following your procedure. Combat this by applying an ice-pack to your cheeks on-and-off for 24 hours after surgery and for several hours a day for the next few days after receiving your implants.

TAKE MEDICATIONS WITH CARE

If you received a single implant, your dentist may simply advise taking ibuprofen. However, if you received All-on-FourⓇ Implants or a XircOn™ Implant-Supported Bridge your dentist may prescribe something a bit stronger. Whatever you take to manage the pain, make sure to follow your dentist’s instructions.

AVOID STRAWS AND SWISHING

While recovering from implant surgery, it’s important not to do any tasks that could cause dry sockets or an incision to open — this can often happen by using straws or mouthwash. For at least a week after your surgery, avoid using these items to allow your wound to heal properly.

DO NOT SMOKE

Smoking causes a number of oral health issues to begin with, but smoking after receiving dental implants can have major negative effects on your wound. It can cause the implant or bone graft to fail, lead to infection, and result in longer healing times.

KEEP UP WITH FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS

Follow-up appointments are essential for ensuring your implants are healing properly. If you skip follow-up appointments, your dentist won’t be able to spot and resolve any problems that may come about after your surgery.

At Radiance Dentistry, Dental Implant Center, we are the only provider of All-on-4Ⓡ Implants using XircOn™ in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Why is that so important? This new-age implant material provides a long-lasting, stronger way to restore your smile.
