What Are Dental Implants?

Illustrated x ray of a person with one dental implant

Dental implants are designed to artificially replace a tooth root using a small titanium post that is surgically inserted into the jaw. There is no need to be concerned, as we will ensure you are comfortable and relaxed during this procedure to insert single or multiple dental implants as required. After surgery, the implants need time to bond or fuse with the surrounding bone, a process called osseointegration. During this time, new bone cells grow on and around the specially treated implant post, fusing it firmly in place until it becomes strong, stable, and able to support a new restoration.

As soon as your implants fully integrate with the jawbone, Dr. Iskandar will attach an abutment to the implant post. This protrudes above the gum line and supports the crown, bridge, or denture. The final step is to make your new restoration, which will be carefully designed to restore your appearance and function. Once in place, your new restoration should feel instantly comfortable and natural.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Our dental care team is dedicated to an exceptional patient experience and will take the time to thoroughly explain your treatment options, treatment costs, and what you can expect along the way. Our founder, Dr. Mounir Iskandar, is a highly trained and accomplished surgical prosthodontist with a background in oral surgery. He has the skill, experience, and knowledge needed to give you a comprehensive dental implant treatment in Irving.

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

To plan your implant surgery, our team will take a cone beam CT scan. This scan provides highly detailed 3D images of your jawbone, allowing him to assess the condition of your jawbone fully. Dr. Iskandar can identify all the important structures, such as sinus cavities, nerves, and blood vessels, to avoid during surgery. These images will show if you have sufficient bone for implant placement or if you require a bone graft or sinus lift before surgery. During your consultation, you may ask any questions you may have about the treatment process or about dental implants in general. We also offer a financial consultation with our treatment coordinators who are experts on insurance and financing options.

Then, Dr. Iskandar will perform the placement surgery, which entails making a small opening in the gum tissue and inserting the implant post into the jawbone. Throughout the whole procedure, your mouth will be completely numb, and you shouldn’t feel any pain thanks to his advanced training and expertise.

Although dental implant placement is considered minor, it is still a surgical procedure, which means you’ll need a couple of days afterward to recover. However, with our precise planning and our advanced technology, complications are kept to a minimum.

Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment

Illustrated dental implant fused to the jawbone

Healing from the surgery itself doesn’t take more than a week, but the imperative part of the process has just begun. Underneath the gums, the jawbone becomes stimulated by the post and produces new tissue growth, enveloping the implant. This process is called osseointegration and is the secret to successful implants.

Once osseointegration is complete, we will put in a connection piece called an abutment, which sticks above the gums and joins the restoration to the rest of the implant.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

After getting impressions of your upper and lower teeth, we send this information to our onsite Xircon Dental Designers dental lab for fabricating the restoration. The lab technicians customize the crown, bridge, or denture to your unique mouth, which means it will look natural and will fit perfectly and comfortably in your bite. You also get to choose the shade of the restoration that you like.

How Dental Implants Can Change Your Life

Irving dental patient showing off her smile

Dental implants are largely considered to be the gold standard for replacing missing teeth because of the potential benefits for patients. Anyone with any number of missing teeth fully understands some of the things they must sacrifice: confidence, the ability to enjoy the foods they want, and the ability to laugh without embarrassment. But replacing missing teeth with dental implants offers benefits that go far past this.

The Ability to Halt Bone Loss

Illustrated skull with bone loss in the jaw

A natural tooth root stimulates the surrounding bone through the forces created every time you bite or chew on that tooth. When it is removed, this stimulation is lost, and as a result, the bone cells that used to surround the tooth root are no longer replaced. By replacing your tooth root with a dental implant post, we can restore this stimulation to your jawbone, halting further bone loss.

A Positive Effect on Remaining Natural Teeth

Older man with a bright smile

Replacing missing teeth with dental implants will protect your remaining teeth, preventing them from moving out of position. Your dental implants will further protect your natural teeth by spreading the forces created during biting and chewing. Unlike other methods of tooth replacement, there is no need for healthy natural teeth to be altered in any way.

Unmatched Strength & Stability

Dental implant teeth are supported by strong dental implant posts that have fused with your jawbone, effectively becoming part of you. This ensures your dental implant teeth feel incredibly strong and stable, which can be an amazing experience for patients who have previously struggled with ill-fitting and loose dentures.

Long-Lasting Results You Can Rely On

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Woman with short blonde spiky hair smiling

Provided you have reasonable oral and general health, you will likely be a good candidate for dental implant treatment. If you smoke and still wish to have dental implants, you must be prepared to quit for at least the duration of treatment and preferably for good. Dr. Iskandar will also assess your jawbone quality. Dental implants must be surrounded by several millimeters of strong and healthy bone to bond with it during osseointegration. If you don’t have sufficient jawbone, it’s not a barrier to treatment. We can restore missing bone using the latest grafting techniques. No bone, no problem!

You mustn’t have any active dental disease, like periodontal or gum disease before starting the dental implant process. These active dental diseases must be controlled beforehand. You must also be in reasonable general health. People who are taking certain medications may be unsuitable for dental implant treatment. For example, bisphosphonates can affect healing. If you are currently undergoing cancer treatment, you may be advised to consider another way to replace missing teeth. We work with the most complex and difficult cases and we are usually able to find solution to place the needed dental implants,

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

Illustrated dental implant on top of a stack of cash

Determining the cost of dental implants in Irving requires that you first meet with a skilled dentist who can go over your oral and overall health history. A cost estimate of the entire procedure and any necessary treatments will be formulated and shared with you so that you can begin to make arrangements based on your budget. You can count on our dental team to help you through the process, ensuring that you remain confident in your decision to choose dental implants.

Preliminary Treatments & Dental Implant Surgery

During your initial complimentary consultation, Dr. Iskandar will provide you with a customized, comprehensive treatment plan. This plan will include all the costs needed for the procedure and any additional fees. Some of the most common services that may be included as part of your plan include bone grafting, gum disease treatment, sedation, and tooth extraction.

Also, you can expect that your dental implant surgery will be incorporated into the cost estimate. Since our team is capable of placing these prosthetics in-house, you will not need to worry about a separate fee from an outside specialist’s office.

How Dental Implants Can Save You Money

Illustrated dental implant with a dental crown against a gray background

Unlike dentures and dental bridges, dental implants may cost more upfront, but in the long run, you can expect to save more money. The reason is that their longevity allows for fewer if any, replacements along the way. They provide predictable outcomes unlike other treatments such us root canals, veneers, and braces. Also, their ability to help reduce the chances of more serious health-related issues makes it possible to save on doctor’s appointments and additional treatments required to maintain optimal overall health.

Another unique advantage that comes with dental implants (and one that can help you save) is that these prosthetics don’t require denture adhesives like other forms of tooth replacement.

Does My Dental Insurance Cover Dental Implants?

Three dental professionals wearing face masks

Whether or not your dental insurance will cover the cost of dental implants is based on the type of plan you have. Some companies are beginning to recognize the necessity of these prosthetics and provide coverage; however, many still view them as elective options for tooth replacement. No matter how your insurance company chooses to handle a claim for dental implants, you can expect that our team will work on your behalf to help you save as much money as possible.

Advanced Dental Implant Procedures: Bone Grafting

Held tablet showing an x ray of a jawbone with a dental implant

There are several different types of bone grafting procedures depending on the extent of the bone loss. Sometimes the amount of bone required may be relatively minor, and a bone graft may be carried out simultaneously during a tooth extraction.

The bone grafting material is often artificial and contains special growth mediums designed to encourage the growth of your natural bone cells. This artificial bone may be in the form of a matrix or membrane. The bone forms a framework for new bone growth and is gradually absorbed by your body. It can take between 3 and 6 months or even longer for a bone graft to heal fully and to become completely integrated with your natural bone. The exact time frame can vary according to the amount of bone required. We currently use the most up-to-date grafting materials from the Glymatrix Technology by Ossix.

Dental Implants Post- Op Instructions

Inserting dental implants into your jawbone is a surgical procedure. Therefore, it is very normal to experience some side effects, particularly during the first few days after surgery. Once the anesthesia has worn off, it is normal to experience some discomfort, and you should take it easy for the rest of the day. This can normally be controlled with over-the-counter painkillers, or we can prescribe something to ensure you feel comfortable.

What to Do Directly After Dental Implant Surgery

After oral surgery, patients are advised to avoid strenuous physical activities until their surgeon advises otherwise. We ask patients to avoid smoking or using smokeless tobacco. Smoking can cause serious damage to the gum tissue and increase the risk of infection. Patients should also avoid using drinking straws for several weeks. The suction created by the drinking straw can cause the blood clot in the incision site to come loose and can also affect any sutures that are in place.

Common Side-Effects

Once the anesthesia has worn off, you may experience minor discomfort. You should take it easy for the rest of the day. This can normally be controlled with over-the-counter medication, or we can prescribe something to ensure you feel comfortable. If you had a single dental implant, it’s not uncommon to experience very little, if any, discomfort.

Diet Guidelines After Dental Implant Surgery

Three colorful smoothies in a row with various herbs

Immediately after surgery, eat soft foods that don’t require chewing. Good food choices include ice cream, yogurt, mashed potatoes, soft pasta, and soup. For single implants, as the area begins to heal, you can gradually introduce harder foods, but wait a while before you try to eat anything very crunchy or with lots of seeds that could get stuck around the surgery site. You can typically start eating normal foods again in 2-3 days with a single implant.

With a full arch restoration, a soft food diet is to be followed during the entire healing process. A good rule of thumb is if you can cut it with a plastic fork, it is okay to eat! After the bone is successfully fused (3-4 months), patients can typically eat whatever they want again.

Maintaining & Caring for Your Dental Implants

Smiling woman with blonde bob

Radiance Dentistry Dental Implant Center is happy to help you learn how to care for your dental implants properly. To maintain a long-term solution, caring for an implant is paramount. As with your natural teeth, dental implants can become loose or even fall out if neglected. Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice per day. A WaterPik – or water flosser – is also a suitable solution to help remove bacteria and food particles from hard-to-reach areas.  See your prosthodontist and hygienist regularly for professional cleanings and check-ups.

Dental Implant FAQs

Are Dental Implants Possible If I Have Severe Bone Loss in My Jaw?

One of the best and most advanced ways to replace missing teeth is with dental implants that artificially replace a natural tooth root. However, dental implants need to be surrounded by several millimeters of strong and healthy bone, which helps the implant post to integrate and bond with the bone. If this bone isn’t present, it may mean a bone graft is required before dental implant surgery. A bone graft isn’t a large procedure, but it does require a great deal of skill. Dr. Iskandar is an experienced prosthodontist who has done countless bone grafting procedures. He uses the most advanced bone grafting material and techniques in the market.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Getting Dental Implants?

With single implant surgery procedures, it’s common to experience only a little, if any, discomfort, and you should be well enough to return to work the next day. For the All-on-4 procedure it’s recommended to rest for 4 days after the surgery and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities.

How Many Dental Implants Will I Need?

Depending on the level of treatment needed, you can get a single implant or multiple implants or have all your teeth replaced with dental implants. The procedure to replace all your teeth is called All-on-4. This highly specialized technique requires 4 to 6, and sometimes more, dental implants to secure a complete implant-supported full mouth bridge.

Will It Be Obvious to Others That I Have Dental Implants?

Your teeth will look 100% natural. We customize the tooth and gum color to match each patient individually. For those that know you, absolutely, they will see a big difference! They will see you smile with greater confidence and see a significant difference in your teeth. For those who you have yet to meet, they will see your smile and admire a very natural and beautiful look.

When Can I Get a Dental Implant After a Tooth Extraction?

In most cases, the implant can be placed the same day, with the restoration placed after four to five months. Depending on the area of the mouth and the quality of the bone, dental implants can take four to six months to heal before they can be ready for a restoration.
