If you are struggling with severe and complex dental health issues, your care team might recommend that you replace all of your teeth with dental implants. This process, known as full mouth reconstruction, can restore your smile’s function, strength, and aesthetics. But what can you expect along the way? How long will recovery take after your dental implant surgery? This blog post helps you to have a realistic view of the road ahead.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
Recovery timelines can vary depending on the health of each patient and the extent of their dental implant procedure. In the first few days, you might notice significant soreness and swelling. Many people are able to ease back into normal activities after just a day or two. However, it might take up to two weeks for any bruising, swelling, and discomfort to completely subside.
Even after your mouth feels relatively normal, your dental implants will still be in the process of bonding with your jawbone. This stage, known as osseointegration, can take a few months. In the meantime, you may have a temporary denture attached to your implants (this is common with All-on-X procedures). Once adequate osseointegration has occurred, our Irving dental implant team can replace the temporary restoration with a permanent one made of advanced XircOn material.
Some dental implant practices, including our team at Radiance Dentistry, use advanced technology to make the entire process easier for patients. For example, we utilize the X-Guide system to precisely place our implants in a minimally invasive manner.
Tips for a Smooth Recovery
To minimize the risk of complications and help your body heal after your full mouth reconstruction surgery, apply these tips:
- Follow your surgeon’s instructions: Take prescribed medications exactly as directed and contact our team if symptoms worsen instead of improving.
- Choose soft, nourishing foods: Stick with yogurt, eggs, smoothies, brothy soups, and mashed foods so you do not overload your temporary teeth or irritate sensitive tissues.
- Manage swelling early: Use cold packs on the outside of your face in short intervals during the first day to help reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Be very gentle during your oral hygiene routine: Brush carefully and use mouth rinses only as directed by our team. If you have questions about a specific oral hygiene product or technique, reach out to us.
- Avoid pressure on the implants: Do not chew hard, crunchy, or sticky foods. You should also not use straws, smoke, or do strenuous exercise during the early part of your healing process.
- Rest and stay hydrated: Sleep with your head elevated, drink plenty of water, and give your body time to recover over the first several days.
Recovering from full mouth reconstruction takes a bit of time and patience, but if you carefully follow post-op instructions, you can expect your experience to go smoothly.
